Trump Administration Tells World Leaders to Just Ignore What the President Says: Report
AlterNet | Erin Corbett / Raw Story | 02/20/27

"The dirty little secret of the 'Never-Mind-What-Trump-Said' approach to foreign policy is that it's not a sustainable foreign policy at all."

One month into President Donald Trump's administration, the divide in his team's approach to national security and foreign policy issues couldn't be more clear. The Rachel Maddow blog laid out the ways in which the Trump team has adopted a "Never-Mind-What-Trump-Said" approach to both matters. ... Read more

Mar-a-Lago: Trump's Winter White House takes over Palm Beach
CNN | Dan Merica | 02/20/17

President Donald Trump, a newcomer to the White House, is still developing his relationship with the people of Washington. But that's far from the case with the people of Palm Beach -- now the location of his so-called Winter White House -- the long spit of land off Florida's East Coast that the real estate mogul has been frequenting for decades.

Since he purchased the Mar-a-Lago property in 1985 for $5 million, Trump's relationship with the tony city and its residents has ebbed and flowed. He's sued the city, fought with the town leadership and turned local issues into nattional controversies. Traffic caused by Trump's motorcade is the most recent sore spot for the people of Palm Beach and the surrounding area. ... Read more

Trump basically takes a vacation every week.

Friends describe Trump "ultimately accessible" in Mar-a-Lago, but that doesn't come without ethical pitfalls.

Democrats and ethics watchdogs questioned how the membership fee doubled to $200,000 after Trump's election. The club could turn into a way for Trump to sell access, watchdogs say, allowing members to pay for the luxury of sharing everything from a terrace to a lobby with the President of the United States, access that most lobbyists would salivate over.
Black Edge: Inside Information, Dirty Money, and the Quest to Bring Down the Most Wanted Man on Wall Street by Sheelah Kolhatkar (2017)

The rise over the last two decades of a powerful new class of billionaire financiers marks a singular shift in the American economic and political landscape. Their vast reserves of concentrated wealth have allowed a small group of big winners to write their own rules of capitalism and public policy. How did we get here? Through meticulous reporting and powerful storytelling, New Yorker staff writer Sheelah Kolhatkar shows how Steve Cohen became one of the richest and most influential figures in finance--and what happened when the Justice Department put him in its crosshairs.

Cohen and his fellow pioneers of the hedge fund industry didn't lay railroads, build factories, or invent new technologies. Rather, they made their billions through speculation, by placing bets in the market that turned out to be right more often than wrong--and for this they have gained not only extreme personal wealth but formidable influence throughout society. Hedge funds now manage nearly $3 trillion in assets, and competition between them is so fierce that traders will do whatever they can to get an edge.

Cohen was one of the industry's greatest success stories. He mastered poker in high school, went off to Wharton, and in 1992 launched SAC Capital, which he built into a $15 billion empire, almost entirely on the basis of his wizardlike stock trading. He cultivated an air of mystery, reclusiveness, and extreme excess, building a 35,000 square foot mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut, and amassing one of the largest private art collections in the world. On Wall Street, Cohen was revered as a genius.

That image was shattered when SAC became the target of a sprawling, seven-year government investigation. Labeled by prosecutors as a "magnet for market cheaters" whose culture encouraged the relentless hunt for "edge"--and even "black edge," or inside information--SAC was ultimately indicted in connection with a vast insider trading scheme, even as Cohen himself was never charged.

Black Edge offers a revelatory look at the gray zone in which so much of Wall Street functions, and a window into the transformation of the U.S. economy. It's a riveting, true-life legal thriller that takes readers inside the government's pursuit of Cohen and his employees, and raises urgent questions about the power and wealth of those who sit at the pinnacle of modern Wall Street.

Here's What People Really Thought About That Trump Press Conference
HP | Ariel Edwards-Levy | 02/20/17

Note: what I found interest about this article was the analysis of how the polling was done. Apparently there is a lot of variables that have to be weighted to make the polling accurate. Hopefully those variables are honest and consistent and aren't easily manipulated to make the oppinion in the polls easily skew(able).

Nothing Seemed To Stop Milo Yiannopoulos -- Until This
HP | Chris D'Angelo | 02/20/17

Racism, bigotry and sexism weren't enough to silence the far-right troll.

A platform of hatred. A plethora of racist, misogynistic and transphobic remarks. But through it all, many stood by far-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos, often defending his right to free speech.

Over the weekend, however, the Breitbart editor finally crossed what may have seemed a non-existent line, sending the American Conservative Union, publishing house Simon & Schuster and others who once supported him running. The breaking point: defending pedophilia. ... Read more

Captured: The Corporate Infiltration of American Democracy by Sheldon Whitehouse (Author), Melanie Wachtell Stinnett (2017)

In Captured, U.S. Senator and former federal prosecutor Sheldon Whitehouse offers an eye-opening take on what corporate influence looks like today from the Senate Floor, adding a first-hand perspective to Jane Mayer's Dark Money.

Americans know something is wrong in their government. Senator Whitehouse combines history, legal scholarship, and personal experiences to provide the first hands-on, comprehensive explanation of what's gone wrong, exposing multiple avenues through which our government has been infiltrated and disabled by corporate powers. Captured reveals an original oversight by the Founders, and shows how and why corporate power has exploited that vulnerability: to strike fear in elected representatives who don't "get right" by threatening million-dollar "dark money" election attacks (a threat more effective and less expensive than the actual attack); to stack the judiciary--even the Supreme Court--in "business-friendly" ways; to "capture" the administrative agencies meant to regulate corporate behavior; to undermine the civil jury, the Constitution's last bastion for ordinary citizens; and to create a corporate "alternate reality" on public health and safety issues like climate change.

Captured shows that in this centuries-long struggle between corporate power and individual liberty, we can and must take our American government back into our own hands.

Secret Ledger in Ukraine Lists Cash ($12.7 million) for Donald Trump's Campaign Chief
NYTimes | author | older 08/14/16

KIEV, Ukraine -- On a leafy side street off Independence Square in Kiev is an office used for years by Donald J. Trump's campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, when he consulted for Ukraine's ruling political party. His furniture and personal items were still there as recently as May.

And Mr. Manafort's presence remains elsewhere here in the capital, where government investigators examining secret records have found his name, as well as companies he sought business with, as they try to untangle a corrupt network they say was used to loot Ukrainian assets and influence elections during the administration of Mr. Manafort's main client, former President Viktor F. As the Trump administration enters its second month, Republican lawmakers have begun a legislative attack on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was created in response to the economic crisis a decade ago. The bureau was created under the Dodd-Frank legislation, which is also coming under attack by Republican lawmakers and the White House. Last week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to repeal a Dodd-Frank anti-corruption measure requiring oil and mining companies to disclose payments to governments. He has also vowed to chip away at other parts of the legislation. We speak to Sheelah Kolhatkar, a former hedge fund analyst who is now a staff writer at The New Yorker. She is the author of the new book "Black Edge: Inside Information, Dirty Money, and the Quest to Bring Down the Most Wanted Man on Wall Street."

We need representatives to sift through what the U.S. government says and what the media reports to find out for themselves the truth, the shades of truth and the untruths. ... Read more

Trump Says There's Been No Russia Contact -- Of Course, Much Of What He Says Is Untrue
HP | S.V. Date | 02/19/17

The Republican leader of the United States Senate was asked last week if he believed the Republican president's denial that his campaign colluded with the foreign power that was trying to help him win.

Mitch McConnell's answer: "I have no idea."

His office later said that McConnell misunderstood the question ? that he thought he was being asked if he personally knew whether Trump's campaign had colluded with Russia. Regardless, McConnell's four words represent the new president's problem in a nutshell. Having made falsehoods a staple of his public discourse, Donald Trump now faces enormous hurdles in getting even his erstwhile allies to put their names behind his credibility.

Trump has made untrue statements about the size of his inauguration crowd, the "standing ovation" he received at CIA headquarters, the "millions" of "illegal" votes cast in the November election, the murder rate, the news coverage given to terror attacks, and, just Saturday at his Florida "campaign" rally, about the amount of vetting refugees trying to enter the country must undergo and about a nonexistent terror incident in Sweden. That's just a partial list, and he's only been in office a month.... Read more

Anatomy Of The Deep State: An Open Conspiracy (02/11/16) [23:03]
The Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of a Shadow Government by Mike Lofgren (2016)

Every Four years, tempers are tested and marriages fray as Americans head to the polls to cast their votes. But does anyone really care what we think? Has our vaunted political system become one big, expensive, painfully scriped reality TV show? In this cringe-inducing expose of the sins and excesses of Beltwayland, a longtime Republican party insider argues that we have become an oligarchy in form if not in name. Hooked on war, genuflecting to big donors, in thrall to discredited economic theories and utterly bereft of a moral compass, America's governing classes are selling their souls to entrenched interest while our bridges collapse, wages, stagnate, and our water is increasingly undrinkable.

Drawing on sinsights gleaned over three decades on Capitol Hill, much of it on the Budget Committee, Lofgren paints a gripping portrait of the dismal swamp on the Potomac and the revolution it will take to reclaim our government and set us back on course.

*The American Deep State: Wall Street, Big Oil, and the Attack on U.S. Democracy by Peter Dale Scott (2015)

This provocative book makes a compelling case for a hidden "deep state" that influences and often opposes official U.S. policies. Prominent political analyst Peter Dale Scott begins by tracing America's increasing militarization, restrictions on constitutional rights, and income disparity since the Vietnam War. He argues that a significant role in this historic reversal was the intervention of a series of structural deep events, ranging from the assassination of President Kennedy to 9/11. He does not attempt to resolve the controversies surrounding these events, but he shows their significant points in common, ranging from overlapping personnel and modes of operation to shared sources of funding. Behind all of these commonalities is what Scott calls the deep state: a second order of government, behind the public or constitutional state, that has grown considerably stronger since World War II. He marshals convincing evidence that the deep state is partly institutionalized in non-accountable intelligence agencies like the CIA and NSA, but it also includes private corporations like Booz Allen Hamilton and SAIC, to which 70 percent of intelligence budgets are outsourced. Behind these public and private institutions is the traditional influence of Wall Street bankers and lawyers, allied with international oil companies beyond the reach of domestic law. With the increasing importance of Gulf states like Saudi Arabia to oil markets, American defense companies, and Wall Street itself, this essential book shows that there is now a supranational deep state, sometimes demonstrably opposed to official American policies and public interest.

J Is for Junk Economics: A Guide to Reality in an Age of Deception by Michael Hudson (02/21/17)

J IS FOR JUNK ECONOMICS is an A-to-Z guide that explains how the world economy really works - and who the winners and losers are. The book includes more than 400 concise and acerbic entries, several essays, and a full topic index. Expanding on KILLING THE HOST: HOW FINANCIAL PARASITES AND DEBT DESTROY THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, Prof. Hudson's new book covers contemporary terms that are misleading or poorly understood as well as many important concepts that have been abandoned - many on purpose - from the long history of political economy.

Two key concepts are RENT THEORY and DEBT, which explain how Unearned Income and the Financial Sector impoverish governments and populations the world over as power and riches flow upward into the hands of the few. Several additional essays provide background for key points and explore today's uncertain political and economic environment.

To understand what's really going on, it's not necessary to re-invent the wheel; the major issues that guide healthy economies were known to the Ancients and were expanded upon by the classical economists of the 18th and 19th centuries, including Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Stuart Mill, E. Peshine Smith, Simon Patten, Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, and others of many political stripes whose aim was to leave the brutal legacy of feudalism behind. Their ideas and principles are brought back into the spotlight here. It is hoped that this book will deconstruct today's "value-free," watered-down and deceptive economics that favor the wealthy, allowing the next generation to create a successful economy with proper checks and balances that will benefit everyone. This is a book you will want to refer to again and again.

Trump Ties to Infrastructure Advisers Roth and LeFrak Run Deep
Bloomberg | Satah Mulholland | 02/15/17

Donald Trump didn't look very far when searching for infrastructure advisers. He turned to two Manhattan real estate developers he has known for decades, Richard LeFrak and Steven Roth.

LeFrak, a billionaire whose New York roots mirror Trump's own, and Roth, chairman of Vornado Realty Trust, one of the city's largest landlords, will spearhead a committee dedicated to one of the new administration's signature campaign pledges. Trump's relationships with the two men, who will lead a council of builders and engineers to monitor spending, crisscross New York in a web of personal and professional ties. ... Read more

Goldman Warns of China Economy Risks During Year of the Rooster
Bloomberg | Enda Curran | 02/14/17

China's economy may have slipped down the global worry list, but significant risks remain, including an abrupt end to a massive credit boom or an overly aggressive policy response if inflation should speed up, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

While a hard landing isn't the New York-based bank's base case for 2017 -- it expects only a modest slowdown -- economists warn that a push to rein in cheap loans will weigh on key sectors such as housing. Officials are trying to keep a lid on frothy house prices without harming the wider economy, where growth remains heavily reliant on government spending. ... Read more

Biggest EU Banks Embark on the Mother of All Debt Binges | Don Quijones | 02/14/17

Spain's three biggest banks, Banco Santander, BBVA and Caixa Bank, have got off to a flying start this year having issued €8.6 billion in new debt, seven times the amount they sold during the same period of last year. The last time they rolled out so much debt so quickly was in 2007, the year that Spain's spectacular real estate bubble reached its climactic peak. ...

... This newfangled class of bail-in-able debt was cooked up last year by French-based financial engineers in order to help France's four global systemically important banks (BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, Groupe BPCE and Société Générale) out of a serious quandary: how to satisfy pending European and global regulations demanding much larger capital and debt buffers without having to pay investors costly returns on the billions of euros of funds they lend them to do so. ... Ocean Pollution: 'Extraordinary' Levels Of Contamination Found At Deepest Parts Of Ocean Inside Fish, Shrimp | Juliana Rose Pignataro | 02/13/17

Manmade pollution has made its way to the furthest reaches of the planet, according to scientists. Researchers found 'extraordinary' amounts of the banned chemicals polychlorinated biphenyls, known as PCBs, more than 36,000 feet down in the ocean.

Scientists from the University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom studied shrimp-like creatures called amphipods residing in the depths of the Mariana Trench, almost seven miles down, during two expeditions in 2014. The team found concentrations of PCBs 50 times greater than those found in animals living in surface waters, according to a study published Monday in Nature, Ecology and Evolution. ... Read more

China Just Created A Record $540 Billion In Debt In One Month

As DB's Oliver Harvey said, "attention has focused on President Trump, but developments on the other side of the world may prove more important. At the beginning of 2016, China embarked on its latest fiscal stimulus funded from local government land sales and a booming property market. The Chinese business cycle troughed shortly thereafter and has accelerated rapidly since." ... Read more

Donald Trump's white nationalist "genius bar": Steve Bannon, Stephen Miller, Michael "Decius" Anton and beyond
Salon | Chauncey Devega | 02/14/17

Donald Trump's administration is built around a brain trust of white nationalists. To deny that fact is to ignore a crucial element of this national crisis: America's "greatest generation" defeated Nazism during World War II, and 70 or so years later one of the country's two leading political parties has injected a more polite version of that poison into its veins and rode to power in Washington on a wave of bigotry and racism.

Among the men who have President Trump's ear, we find White House strategist Steve Bannon, senior adviser Stephen Miller, deputy assistant to the president Sebastian Gorka and newly installed Attorney General Jeff Sessions. ... Read more

*Jim Rickards Explains the Global Elite's 'Ice-9' Plan to Freeze The Entire Financial System (02/07/17) [40:52]
The Road to Ruin: The Global Elites' Secret Plan for the Next Financial Crisis by James Rickards (2016)

A drumbeat is sounding among the global elites. The signs of a worldwide financial meltdown are unmistakable. This time, the elites have an audacious plan to protect themselves from the fallout: hoarding cash now and locking down the global financial system when a crisis hits.

Since 2014, international monetary agencies have been issuing warnings to a small group of finance ministers, banks, and private equity funds: the U.S. government's cowardly choices not to prosecute J.P. Morgan and its ilk, and to bloat the economy with a $4 trillion injection of easy credit, are driving us headlong toward a cliff.

As Rickards shows in this frightening, meticulously researched book, governments around the world have no compunction about conspiring against their citizens. They will have stockpiled hard assets when stock exchanges are closed, ATMs shut down, money market funds frozen, asset managers instructed not to sell securities, negative interest rates imposed, and cash withdrawals denied.

If you want to plan for the risks ahead, you will need Rickards's cutting-edge synthesis of behavioral economics, history, and complexity theory. It's a guidebook to thinking smarter, acting faster, and living with the comforting knowledge that your wealth is secure.

The global elites don't want this book to exist. Their plan to herd us like sheep to the slaughter when a global crisis erupts -- and, of course, to maintain their wealth -- works only if we remain complacent and unaware. Thanks to The Road to Ruin, we don't need to be.

National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's job security in jeopardy

Fukushima | "Nearly 700,000 tons of radioactive water stored at Fukushima plant" (2015) (article)

As reported by the Asahi Shimbun, 700,000 tons of highly contaminated radioactive water has accumulated in temporary storage tanks at the devastated Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The figure grows by several hundred tons per day.

This means an additional 1,000-ton, 30-foot tall storage tank must be added every few days. More than a thousand such tanks now exist at the site.

700,000 tons of contaminated water is equal to more than 188 million U.S. gallons.

As the article reports, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) claims that most of the stored wastewater has already been processed by its ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System), as of May 2015.

However, the ALPS had suffered numerous breakdowns, and even leaks into the environment, over the past several years. Also, ALPS only filters out 60-some of the radioactive substances in the wastewater. There are a couple hundred radioactive substances contaminating the water.

One of the hazardous radioactive substances that cannot be filtered out is tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen. Tepco wants to simply dump the massive amount of tritium into the Pacific, but Japanese fishermen have resisted the plan for years.

Another unresolved question is where the 60-odd radioactive substances filtered out of the wastewater by ALPS will be stored or dumped. | Contaminated Ground Water Flows into the Pacific Ocean Every Day

80-100 thousand gallons of contaminated ground water flows into the Pacific Ocean every day | Cost of Fukushima disaster expected to soar to ¥20 trillion (11/30/16)

¥20 trillion equates to about $180 billion in U.S. currency. Please note, however, the full cost accounting to increase the expenses for dealing with the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe's ongoing aftermath to more than $500 billion, by some estimates.

I thought CNN was taking a courageous stand against White House lies. I was mistaken

Well, I certainly got that one wrong. Based on news reports, and after two phone calls to check them out, on Tuesday I wrote a column saluting Jake Tapper and CNN for saying, "No!" to Kellyanne Conway when the White House offered her up as a guest for Tapper's Sunday program. Except for Fox and Breitbart, I said, no news organization had been more useful to Donald Trump's presidential candidacy than CNN, but now it appeared they were fed up with serving as a springboard for the lies tossed around like grenades by Trump's propaganda minions -- most notably Ms. Conway, the president's senior adviser who doubles, I pointed out (with apologies to my late Baptist deacon father for the language) as the administration's official Queen of Bullshit. ... These are some of the words that describe what's been happening in the Arctic over the past year as surge after surge of warm air have stalled, and at times reversed, sea ice pack growth. And the unfortunate string of superlatives is set to continue this week.

Arctic sea ice is already sitting at a record low for this time of year and a powerful North Atlantic storm is expected to open the flood gates and send more warmth pouring into the region from the lower latitudes. By Thursday, it could reach up to 50°F above normal. In absolute temperature, that's near the freezing point and could further spur a decline in sea ice. ... Read more

Trump's imaginary America is a realm of crime and depravity -- but he can find that stuff closer to home
Salon | Gary Legum | 02/10/17

The president's new orders on crime and law enforcement offer only empty symbolism -- but real people will get hurt/p>

On Thursday, President Trump signed three executive orders related to law enforcement. As with some of his past orders, this latest round seemed partly like a publicity stunt, designed more to make him look busy while having little practical effect in reality. Since he signed them during a ceremony to swear in Jeff Sessions as the nation's new attorney general, one could say they are the equivalent of giving a new employee his marching orders just before showing him to his desk on his first day of work.

On the surface, these orders would not seem to do much. One order directs Sessions to appoint someone to run the generically named Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety. A second directs federal agencies to review ongoing efforts pursuing international drug cartels and criminal syndicates to make sure they are sufficiently effective, and to report back to Trump in a few months on the results. The third order could be called the "Blue Lives Matter" EO, and it mostly tells Sessions to make extra-double-sure that federal and local laws against harming law enforcement personnel are adequate, and to recommend whether penalties for violence against authorities should be made more harsh. ... Leaks Suggest Trump's Own Team Is Alarmed By His Conduct

President Donald Trump was confused about the dollar: Was it a strong one that's good for the economy? Or a weak one? So he made a call ? except not to any of the business leaders Trump brought into his administration or even to an old friend from his days in real estate. Instead, he called his national security adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, according to two sources familiar with Flynn's accounts of the incident.

Flynn has a long record in counterintelligence but not in macroeconomics. And he told Trump he didn't know, that it wasn't his area of expertise, that, perhaps, Trump should ask an economist instead.

Trump was not thrilled with that response, but that may have been a function of the time of day. Trump had placed the call at 3 a.m., according to one of Flynn's retellings, although neither the White House nor Flynn's office responded to requests for confirmation about that detail. ... Read more

History teaches us that financial regulations die from a thousand cuts rather than a signifying event. As Cornell University law professor Saule Omarova puts it, "Financial reform is like a big onion. The more layers you peel off, the harder you cry."

For example, by the time the Gramm-Leach-Bliley law removed the Glass-Steagall firewall between commercial and investment banks in 1999, that separation was already effectively wiped out--by administrative waivers granted by regulators. The 1994 Riegle-Neal Act that formally allowed banks to open branches across state lines came after a decade of states altering rules to undermine local control of finance. Deregulation of mortgage rules that led to the housing bubble rolled out over a 20-year period, spanning Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. And even then, it took the George W. Bush administration's laissez-faire supervision to really supercharge predatory lending. ... Read more

A former TV star as U.S. president doesn't seem to have injected markets with much of a ''fear factor.'' But digging beneath the surface of an eight-year bull run exposes subtle signs that hint at an uneasy optimism.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has sailed past 20,000 and the S&P 500 is nearing its life-time high set in January, indicating that investors have so far shrugged off the uncertainty brought by the new administration. But, here are five charts that suggest all is not well in markets. ... Read more

Harry Dent: Stocks Will Fall 70-90% Within 3 Years | author | 01/30/17

All four of the cycles I track point down now. One after the next has peaked in the last several years. All four point down into early 2020 or so. That's only happened in the early to mid-'70s when we had the worst stock crashes back then, the OPEC embargo, etc -- the worst set of crises since the 1930s.

The next three years are likely to be the worst we see in our lifetimes. It will be more like the early 1930s when stocks hit a debt bubble and financial asset bubbles crashed, which they only do once in a lifetime such as the early 1930s. Stocks will be down 70, 80, 90% -- that's to be as expected in this stage of the cycle after such a bubble. ... Read more

Amnesty International has released a shocking report claiming as many as 13,000 people--mostly civilians--have been hanged in a Syrian government military prison in recent years. Amnesty accuses the Assad government of running a human slaughterhouse and engaging in a deliberate policy of extermination by hanging thousands of civilians at a prison near Damascus. Amnesty says the killings amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. We speak to the co-author of the report, Nicolette Waldman, an Amnesty International researcher specializing in detention issues.

WATCH: Jake Tapper Hammers Kellyanne Conway in Heated New Interview
Salon & AlterNet | Taylor Link / Salon | 02/08/17

On Monday, legendary news anchor Dan Rather singled out CNN's Jake Tapper as today's journalistic standard. On Tuesday, Tapper showed off his talent in a 25-minute, wide-ranging showdown with White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway

After Conway fabricated a terror attack -- the so-called Bowling Green massacre -- to justify a constitutionally-questionable travel ban, Tapper confidently held the high ground in the interview. "You cited a massacre that didn't happen. You said the media didn't cover it," Tapper said. ... Read more

Note: I read this YouTube comment several days ago and decided to copy it here... it seemed so appropriate.

Indeed, the Middle East conflicts were originated by the British and were taken over by the US. Evidently, you don't even know what the "old Middle East" is, for if you did, you'd know that Middle East in its current format was curved out of the Ottoman empire by the British after the WWI. Britain carved small countries based on oil reserves and ethnicity out of what was left of Ottoman empire and it pitted different ethnicities against each other, so they would have to rely on the British to be protected against each other. In some cases they put minorities in charge of majorities (e.g. Sunnis in Iraq and Bahrain, and Alawites in Syria...) to be able to control their respective societies! After the WWII the Americans made a pact with the Saudis to maintain the "petrodollar" for US protection of their regime against both internal dissent, and external threat. That is why the US ignores Saudi involvement in most terrorist activities such as 9-11 and support for ISIS! FWI, the old "Middle East" primarily consisted of Ottoman empire before the British took it apart.?

Elizabeth Warren Silenced on Senate Floor for Reading Words of Coretta Scott King
AlterNet | Alexandra Rosenmann | 02/08/17

Elizabeth Warren was silenced on the Senate floor Tuesday night in an unprecedented act of Republican censure. She had been reading a letter from Coretta Scott King criticizing the civil rights record of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Trump's cabinet appointee for attorney general.

"Mr. Sessions has used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens in the district he now seeks to serve as a federal judge," Warren said, citing the widow of Martin Luther King Jr. ... Read more

*Fukushima, Japan | 'Fukushima catastrophe ongoing: Leakage on a daily basis' (02/06/17)

RT interviews Beyond Nuclear on recent measurements showing 53,000 Rem per hour (deadly to humans within a minute or less, at close range, in the absence of radiation shielding), or higher, radiation dose rates in the melted down Unit 2 reactor at Fukushima Daiichi, Japan. (The interview includes a section about the chronic, and acute, leaks of radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean from the site. | Fate of Fukushima No. 2 nuclear plant remains unknown (01/03/17) | "Nearly 700,000 tons of radioactive water stored at Fukushima plant" (2015) (article)

Alex Jones' Former Editor Trashes Him as a Trump Sellout and Snake Oil Salesman

Mike Pence Breaks Senate Tie to Confirm Betsy DeVos
AlterNet | Laura Clawson / DailyKos | 02/07/17

For the first time in American history, a vice president had to vote in the Senate to break a tie on a Cabinet nominee, and Betsy DeVos was confirmed as Donald Trump's education secretary. DeVos has no experience as an educator, or even as a public school student or parent of public school students, but she sure does donate a lot of money to Republicans.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski could have stopped DeVos in committee, but instead they voted for her there, waited to ensure she would have enough votes, then took the opportunity to grandstand about how they couldn't vote for her. Democrats were united against DeVos, and senators were flooded with calls opposing her nomination, but in the end, there weren't three Republicans to vote against an unqualified, unpopular nominee. Republicans whose offices were getting so many calls against DeVos that voters couldn't get through or even leave voicemails nonetheless voted for her. ... Read more

Refugee Screening Process for US
The CIA as Organized Crime: How Illegal Operations Corrupt America and the World by Douglas Valentine (2017)

Author of three books on CIA operations, Valentine's research into CIA activities began when CIA Director William Colby gave him free access to interview CIA officials who had been involved in various aspects of the Phoenix program in South Vietnam. It was a permission Colby was to regret. The CIA would rescind it, making every effort to impede publication of The Phoenix Program, which documented the CIA's elaborate system of population surveillance, control, entrapment, imprisonment, torture and assassination in Vietnam. While researching Phoenix, Valentine learned that the CIA allowed opium and heroin to flow from its secret bases in Laos, to generals and politicians on its payroll in South Vietnam. His investigations into this illegal activity focused on the CIA's relationship with the federal drugs agencies mandated by Congress to stop illegal drugs from entering the United States. Based on interviews with senior officials, Valentine wrote two subsequent books, The Strength of the Wolf and The Strength of the Pack, showing how the CIA infiltrated federal drug law enforcement agencies and commandeered their executive management, intelligence and foreign operations staffs in order to ensure that the flow of drugs continues unimpeded to traffickers and foreign officials in its employ.Ultimately, portions of his research materials would be archived at the National Security Archive, Texas Tech University's Vietnam Center, and John Jay College. This book includes excerpts from the above titles along with subsequent articles and transcripts of interviews on a range of current topics, with a view to shedding light on the systemic dimensions of the CIA's ongoing illegal and extra-legal activities. These terrorism and drug law enforcement articles and interviews illustrate how the CIA's activities impact social and political movements abroad and in the United States.A common theme is the CIA's ability to deceive and propagandize the American public through its impenetrable government-sanctioned shield of official secrecy and plausible deniability.Though investigated by the Church Committee in 1975, CIA praxis then continues to inform CIA praxis now. Valentine tracks its steady infiltration into practices targeting the last population to be subjected to the exigencies of the American empire: the American people.

Republicans Happy To Have Trump Distract The Press As They Move Their Agenda
HP | Matt Fuller | 02/07/17

President Donald Trump's first two whirlwind weeks in office have left congressional Republicans gasping over questions of crowd size, "alternative facts," even baseless claims about massive voter fraud ? and that was really just the initial few days. But Trump's antics have also handed members a gift: distraction.

The often-unhinged tweets, aggressive executive orders and erratic behavior have all provided Republicans some cover as they attempt to repeal a health care law that is becoming more popular. "There is some merit to the argument that would suggest that much of the focus is on what President Trump is doing and not as much on what Congress is doing," ... Read more

Which Assets Are Most Likely To Survive The "System Reset"?
Click to zoom in ZeroHedge | author | 02/06/17

Longtime correspondent C.A. recently asked a question every American household should be asking: which assets are most likely to survive the "system re-set" that is now inevitable? It's a question of great import because not all assets are equal in terms of survivability in crisis, when the rules change without advance notice. ...

... The charts below describe the key dynamics driving a system re-set. Earned income (wages) as a share of GDP has been falling for decades: this means labor is receiving a diminishing share of economic growth. Since costs and debt continue rising while incomes are declining or stagnating, this asymmetry eventually leads to insolvency.

The "fix" for insolvency has been higher debt and debt-based spending--in essence, borrowing from future income to fund more consumption today. But each unit of new debt is generating less economic activity/growth. This is called diminishing returns: eventually the costs of servicing the additional debt exceed the increasingly trivial gains. ... Read more

Senate Votes To Kill Dodd Frank Anti-Corruption Rule

The Republican-led Congress killed a controversial U.S. securities disclosure rule early on Friday aimed at curbing corruption at big oil, gas and mining companies.

In a 52 to 47 vote, the Senate approved a resolution already passed by the House of Representatives that wipes from the books a rule requiring companies such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron Corp to publicly state the taxes and other fees they pay to foreign governments.

Republican President Donald Trump is expected to sign it shortly.

Insane Clown President: Dispatches from the 2016 Circus (2017)
by Matt Taibbi

In twenty-five pieces from Rolling Stone--plus two original essays--Matt Taibbi tells the story of Western civilization's very own train wreck, from its tragicomic beginnings to its apocalyptic conclusion. Years before the clown car of candidates was fully loaded, Taibbi grasped the essential themes of the story: the power of spectacle over substance, or even truth; the absence of a shared reality; the nihilistic rebellion of the white working class; the death of the political establishment; and the emergence of a new, explicit form of white nationalism that would destroy what was left of the Kingian dream of a successful pluralistic society.

Taibbi captures, with dead-on, real-time analysis, the failures of the right and the left, from the thwarted Bernie Sanders insurgency to the flawed and aimless Hillary Clinton campaign; the rise of the "dangerously bright" alt-right with its wall-loving identity politics and its rapturous view of the "Racial Holy War" to come; and the giant fail of a flailing, reactive political media that fed a ravenous news cycle not with reporting on political ideology, but with undigested propaganda served straight from the campaign bubble. At the center of it all stands Donald J. Trump, leading a historic revolt against his own party, "bloviating and farting his way" through the campaign, "saying outrageous things, acting like Hitler one minute and Andrew Dice Clay the next." For Taibbi, the stunning rise of Trump marks the apotheosis of the new postfactual movement.

Taibbi frames the reporting with original essays that explore the seismic shift in how we perceive our national institutions, the democratic process, and the future of the country. Insane Clown President is not just a postmortem on the collapse and failure of American democracy. It offers the riveting, surreal, unique, and essential experience of seeing the future in hindsight.

The Central Banks Pull Back: Now It's Up to Fiscal Policy to "Save the World" | 02/02/17

Have you noticed that the breathless anticipation of the next central bank "save" has diminished? Remember when the financial media was in a tizzy of excitement, speculating on what new central bank expansion would send the global markets higher in paroxysms of risk-on joy?

Those days are gone. Nowadays, central banks cautiously continue the bond buying programs they've had in place for years, but their policy initiatives are tepid at best: they talk about expanding asset-buying programs to include more stocks, or discuss notching interest rates higher in some cases; but the talk is subdued, as expectations are being consciously lowered.

The reason central bankers are pulling back from their previous "we can do no wrong, we're saving the world" expansion is those policies have failed to bolster the real economy. Even conventional economists who never met a central bank expansion they didn't love are grudgingly conceding that quantitative easing and all the other monetary expansions did little but make the rich richer and everyone else poorer. (see wealth chart below for data confirming this.)

Even the Davos crowd who benefited so mightily from central bank largesse is looking anxiously over their shoulders, fearing a sharpened pitchfork wielded by an enraged debt-serf might be plunged into their backs.

*The Chinese Credit Bubble | James Rickards | 01/31/17

The problem is that the rail transportation infrastructure I found so impressive, and most of the other infrastructure in China, was built with debt. The debt was financed by the mega-Chinese banks on government orders.

Since the ghost city buildings don't have tenants and the train tickets are heavily subsidized, there's no way that debt can be repaid. Instead new loans are made to pay interest on the old, or the debt is refinanced or rolled-over in a never-ending stream of zombie lending.

The banks finance their lending with customer deposits or sales of wealth management products (WMPs, something like the CDOs that brought down Lehman Brothers). WMP's have been described by the former Chairman of the Bank of China as the greatest Ponzi scheme in history. Banks rely on sales of new WMPs to redeem the old ones at maturity. The projects financed by the original WMPs cannot repay them.

How big is this mountain of debt? Total Chinese debt at all levels (household, corporate, bank and government) is now more than 250% of GDP as shown in the chart below

U.S. Navy SEAL William "Ryan" Owens was killed in the raid on a branch of al Qaeda, also known as AQAP, in al Bayda province, which the Pentagon said also killed 14 militants. However, medics at the scene said about 30 people, including 10 women and children, were killed. ...

... U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations. As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists. ... Steve Bannon: 'We're Going to War in the South China Sea ... No Doubt'
AlterNet | Benjamin Haas / The Guardian | 02/02/17

The United States and China will fight a war within the next 5 to 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and "there's no doubt about that." At the same time, the US will be in another "major" war in the Middle East.

Those are the views -- nine months ago at least -- of one of the most powerful men in Donald Trump's administration, Steve Bannon, the former head of far-right news website Breitbart who is now chief strategist at the White House. ... Read more

The FBI Has Quietly Investigated White Supremacist Infiltration Of Law Enforcement
TheIntercept | Alice Speri | 01/31/17

White Supremacists and other domestic extremists maintain an active presence in U.S. police departments and other law enforcement agencies. A striking reference to that conclusion, notable for its confidence and the policy prescriptions that accompany it, appears in a classified FBI Counterterrorism Policy Guide from April 2015, obtained by The Intercept. The guide, which details the process by which the FBI enters individuals on a terrorism watchlist, the Known or Suspected Terrorist File, notes that "domestic terrorism investigations focused on militia extremists, white supremacist extremists, and sovereign citizen extremists often have identified active links to law enforcement officers," and explains in some detail how bureau policies have been crafted to take this infiltration into account. ... How Steve Bannon Rose To The Top Of Trump's Power Structure
ZeroHedge | author | 01/30/17

On Saturday night, President Trump signed an executive order promoting Chief Strategist Steve Bannon to the "principals committee" of the National Security Council -- while, according to the New York Times, downgrading the roles of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence, who will now attend only when the council is considering issues in their direct areas of responsibilities. The move puts Bannon, a former Navy surface warfare officer, admiral's aide, investment banker and media executive, on the same level as Trump's national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

"The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while ... I want you to quote this ... The media here is the opposition party. They don't understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States. ... The elite media got it dead wrong, 100 percent dead wrong ... The mainstream media has not fired or terminated anyone associated with following our campaign ... Look at the Twitter feeds of those people: They were outright activists of the Clinton campaign ... That's why you have no power ... You were humiliated." ...

Trump's 'Two-for-One' Regulation Executive Order
TheAtlantic | Bourree Lam | 01/30/17

On Monday morning, President Donald Trump signed yet another executive order, following the 17 wide-ranging executive actions enacted during his first week in office. This latest order tackles yet another one of Trump's campaign talking points and will require federal agencies to cut two existing regulations for every new regulation they implement.

"If there's a new regulation, they have to knock out two. But it goes far beyond that, we're cutting regulations massively for small business and for large business," Trump said during the signing of the order, while surrounded by small-business leaders. He stressed that the new measure is meant to ease the opening and expansion of small businesses, and said that America's small businesses "have been treated very badly" and that it was "virtually impossible to expand your existing business because of regulations." ... Why Trump's Week of Chaos May Suit Steve Bannon's Bigger Plans
AlterNet | Heather Digby Parton / Salon | 01/30/17

The alt-right guru turned Trump adviser is using both the "Muslim ban" and bogus voter-fraud charges to spread disorder.

There was so much going on in President Donald Trump's first week of presidential decrees that it was hard to keep track of it all. The most acute problem, in that it immediately affected people's lives, was the executive order issued on Friday that banned entry to the United States for immigrants, refugees or visitors arriving from a list of certain Muslim-majority countries designated as having terrorist activity. On Saturday when it became clear that the ban was taking effect immediately and people were being denied entry or told at their point of origin that they could not board U.S.-bound planes, all hell broke loose.

Nobody understood the rules. Passengers were being held and interrogated. Chaos ensued at international airports all over the country. Protesters gathered en masse at terminals to show their solidarity. Immigration lawyers arrived to help detainees and their families navigate a system that nobody understood -- because it was arbitrary and constitutionally dubious. The world reacted with disbelief. ... Read more

"It will not get better": Former Bush administration official has a warning about President Trump's administration
Salon | Matthew Rozsa | 02/01/17

Yet another former official for President George W. Bush has gone on the record criticizing President Donald Trump -- this time it's Eliot A. Cohen, who served as a counselor to former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice from 2007 to 2009.

Trump's first week as president has already been marred by a "dark and divisive inaugural speech, extraordinary attacks on a free press, a visit to the CIA that dishonored a monument to anonymous heroes who paid the ultimate price, and now an attempt to ban selected groups of Muslims," Cohen wrote in The Atlantic. He pointed out that "because the problem is one of temperament and character, it will not get better."

Cohen predicted that Trump's poor character and choice of advisers will "probably end in calamity -- substantial domestic protest and violence, a breakdown of international economic relationships, the collapse of major alliances, or perhaps one or more new wars (even with China) on top of the ones we already have." Cohen continued, "It will not be surprising in the slightest if his term ends not in four or in eight years, but sooner, with impeachment or removal under the 25th Amendment. The sooner Americans get used to these likelihoods, the better." ... Read more

The Chaos Candidate Becomes The Chaos President
HP | S.V. Date | 0/30/17

Perhaps most revealing about the 10-day-old Donald Trump presidency: The announcement of White House aide Stephen Bannon's elevation was nowhere near the most controversial thing that has happened thus far. Trump has insisted, despite obvious evidence to the contrary, that as many as 1.5 million people attended his inauguration. He has claimed, with no evidence at all, that as many as 5 million people voted illegally in his election -- every single one of them for his opponent. He issued a statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day that omitted any mention of Jews.

And at the close of business marking his first week in office Friday, he signed an executive order banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S., without running it past the departments that would implement it. The ensuing disarray brought swift rebuke from several federal judges, blocking parts of the order at least temporarily. ... Read more

He's not speaking for Donald Trump and his company. He's speaking as the leader of the free world."

Among his more conservative backers, they said Trump still had done plenty of good things. Ruddy said he was heartened by the tone of the speech, which he called "a terrific start and a very high bar." Reed, the New York congressman, said he was pleased with the early executive orders, freezing regulations and beginning the reversal of the Affordable Care Act.

Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers-backed group, said he was pleased with the administration's alignment on corporate tax reform and health care -- and he expects them to make drastic changes soon. Congress gone wild! While Trump grabs headlines, the House has been hard at work pushing GOP agenda
Salon | Gary Legum | 01/27/17

Congressional Republicans are drafting their own radical agenda for the future of America

Donald Trump is not the only game in Washington when it comes to pushing for dangerous and destructive policies. The House of Representatives of the 115th Congress has been hard at work since its swearing-in three weeks ago. In that time, the chamber has set the stage for a frenzy of revanchist policy prescriptions that, should they pass the Senate and be signed into law by the president, will radically alter the nation's regulatory landscape, hurt women and their health, and ransom off our national parks to mining and other corporate interests.

While the House was writing the rules package that will govern this session of Congress, the chairman of the chamber's natural resources committee slipped in a provision that will make it easier for the government to transfer federal lands to states. This could be the prelude to states then selling off much of this land to whichever industry is looking to strip-mine it: timber companies, oil and gas interests, cattlemen like Cliven Bundy, you name it. ... Here, for example, was House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) in a Wednesday evening interview with Greta Van Susteren on MSNBC: "Obamacare is collapsing under its own weight.... It's already going away. Obamacare is leaving."

President Donald Trump made similar remarks at a Republican Party retreat in Philadelphia on Thursday, when he boasted that acting quickly to repeal the law would do the Democrats a favor because the program was bound to fall apart on its own. ... Read more

Donald Trump, You Are Being Set Up By These Suckas In Washington
HP | Russell Simmons | 01/26/17

I am convinced you are the Trojan horse. The extremists in the Republican Party and religious right have been praying for a long time to put a candidate in the position to turn back the tide of our forward push for justice and equality, which is in effect the American dream. The pendulum of consciousness always swings towards compassion and justice. There are moments that it swings back but once given a taste of freedom the people will thirst for it and will not let anyone take that away. African-Americans will never again be slaves, women will never again lose their right to vote or go quietly back into the coat hanger days, the LGBTQ community will not go back into the closet, the right to worship as we see fit will not be taken from one -- you will have to strip it from everyone.

No American president has ever entered the Oval Office with an agenda so set on trying to undo the civil, social and political gains for equality that have been so long fought. And now we are bracing to have all of our victories overturned. Those lowest common denominator radicals of the Republican party have you locked in a role to do their bidding. ... Read more

Democrats' risky new Trump strategy: Pry him away from his own party and win back his voters
Salon | Matthew Sheffield | 01/27/17

Aware of the fact that Donald Trump's Electoral College victory was made possible by at least a modest number of Democratic-leaning voters crossing party lines, congressional Democrats appear to be pursuing an intriguing strategy: They're trying to force the president to choose between the people who elected him and the political party he nominally leads.

Trump is the highest-ranking Republican in Washington. But the new president's lack of interest in the details of policymaking mean that he's outsourcing a lot of it to the congressional GOP. That's dangerous for Trump's public approval ratings because conservative elites generally favor economic policies that are likely to be unpopular with the blue-collar workers who got him elected. ... Donald Trump, Republicans plan enormous tax cuts, even though it's going to balloon the deficit
Salon | Matthew Rozsa | 01/25/17

... "A number of Trump advisers in recent weeks have privately questioned whether tax reform needs to be 'revenue neutral,'" Politico reported on Wednesday, citing people involved in the early discussions. What the Trump administration has not yet done, Politico noted, is figure out how to avoid ballooning the deficit while following through on its campaign promises to increase military spending, construct a border wall, and finance infrastructure development. This dilemma, along with the fact that it will be difficult for Republicans to bring Democrats on board for a tax cut plan that increases the deficit (the one from Trump's campaign would cost $10 trillion over a decade), could prove very difficult for the Trump team to overcome. ... The coming unhappiness with Trump and his team will not arise because of the actions they take. They will clearly do everything in their might to make America great again. But the probabilities are totally against them to achieve this goal. They are taking over power at a time when debt has grown exponentially since the 1970s. They are also assuming power of a country that has not achieved a proper budget surplus for well over half a century. Even worse, the US has not had a positive trade balance since the early 1970s. So here we have a country that has been living above its means for decades and has no real chance of changing this vicious cycle.

"The Federal debt is at $20 trillion and has been growing at the rate of 9% per year for the last 40 odd years. The forecast for the next four years is that the growth of the debt will accelerate. Total US debt is over $70 trillion or over 3.5x GDP. But that is just a fraction of the US liabilities. Unfunded liabilities are over $200 trillion. And you can add to that to the real gross derivative positions of US banks, which most likely more than $500 trillion.

Corporate borrowings have also surged since the Great Financial Crisis started. In 2006 US corporate debt was just over $2 trillion. Today it is more than 3x higher at $7 trillion! At the same time, cash as a percentage of corporate debt is declining and is now down to 27%. Within this massive increase in debt, there are major defaults looming in many areas like car loans, student loans and the fracking sector where potential write offs could be in the trillions of dollars..

Though Promised for Domestic Use, Dakota Access Pipeline May Fuel Oil Exports
TheIntercept | Lee Fang | older, but good 09/01/16

Access Pipeline, which will connect fracked crude oil from the Bakken fields in North Dakota to markets across the country -- claim the controversial project will enhance energy independence. But at least a portion of the oil may well end up as exports to foreign markets, either as crude or as a refined product.

Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, has built public support and pressured regulators to approve the project by asserting that the oil will enhance energy independence, because it will be used exclusively by U.S. consumers. ... Read more

South Dakota lawmakers declare state of 'emergency' to force repeal of voter-imposed ethics law
RawStory | David Edwards | 01/23/17

Lawmakers in South Dakota are invoking emergency powers to overturn an anti-corruption law that was passed by a ballot measure during the 2016 election.

The South Dakota Government Accountability and Anti-Corruption Act makes it illegal for lawmakers to receive more than a total of $100 annually from lobbyists in the form of "any compensation, reward, employment, gift, honorarium, beverage, meal, food, or other thing of value made or given directly or indirectly." ... 12 million pages of declassified CIA files are now available online for everyone to view | author | 01/20/17

The CIA posted a vast cache of close to 12 million pages of declassified documents online, which include information on UFO sightings, Nazi War Crimes, Project Stargate and other once-secret files.

The information was first released in 1995 when then-President Bill Clinton ordered all documents with "historical value" that were at least 25 years old to be declassified.

However, the documents were only physically accessible from four computer terminals at the National Archives in Washington DC.

In 2000, the CIA released the documents on its electronic records search tool CREST, but the files were still only available by physically attending the Archives.

Following a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit in 2014, the CIA said it would post the 930,000 documents online in entirety, but claimed it would take six years to scan every page.

CIA information management director said the agency was able to complete the project quicker than expected, with the official giving assurances that nothing had omitted and the half-century of data was published in entirety.

Six maps that show the anatomy of America's vast infrastructure
WashingtonPost | Tim Meko | older, 12/01/16

President-elect Donald Trump's plan to invest about $550 billion in new infrastructure projects across the country was a central theme in his campaign. "We're going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none. And we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it," Trump said. Details are still murky, but it appears that the plan will rely on tax credits to spur private investment.

The maps you are about to see show the massive scope of America's infrastructure using data from OpenStreetMap and various government sources. They provide a glimpse into where that half-trillion dollars may be invested. ... Read more

Donald Trump Will Not Release Tax Returns, White House Adviser Says
NBC News | Alexandra Jaffe | 01/22/17

Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Donald Trump, said Sunday that the president would not be releasing his tax returns, reversing months of repeated campaign-trail promises to do so after an audit is completed.

Conway's comments came in response to a petition with more than 200,000 signatures calling on Trump to release his tax returns. Any petition on the site that receives 100,000 signatures in 30 days receives a response from the White House; this petition reached twice that in two days. "The White House response is that he's not going to release his tax returns," Conway said in an interview on ABC's "This Week." ... Read more

Sunday Show Hosts Hit Back On Trump Administration's Lies
HP | Amanda Terkel | 01/22/17

"Alternative facts are not facts, they're falsehoods."

President Donald Trump's administration has spent its first days in office aggressively attacking the media for what it calls attempts to "delegitimize" the country's new leader. On Sunday, the hosts of the network public affairs shows hit right back and essentially called out the administration for lying.

Both Trump and Press Secretary Sean Spicer insisted on Saturday that the crowd that watched the inauguration this year was the biggest ever. Trump claimed that TV networks showed a picture of an "empty field" and that from where he stood, "it looked like a million, a million and a half people" had attended. He also falsely stated that the crowds "went all the way back to the Washington Monument."

"This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration -- period -- both in person and around the globe," Spicer said at his first press briefing.

None of those statements are true. But on Sunday, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Kellyanne Conway, a counselor to the president, continued to attack the media for being dishonest and focusing on crowd size ? an issue Trump loved to talk about during his campaign. The Sunday show hosts, however, aggressively went after the Trump administration for its lies. ... Read more

Women's March on Washington: Historic Protest Three Times Larger Than Trump's Inaugural Crowd
DemocracyNow | author | 01/23/17

In one of the largest days of protest in U.S. history, millions took to the streets Saturday one day after the inauguration of Donald Trump. The largest protest was the Women's March on Washington, where more than 500,000 packed the streets. According to crowd scientists at Manchester Metropolitan University in Britain, the crowd was roughly three times the size of the audience at President Trump's inauguration a day earlier. Women-led marches took place in over 600 locations spread across seven continents--including Antarctica. In addition to Washington, massive protests took place in Boston; Chicago; Denver; Los Angeles; Madison, Wisconsin; New York; Oakland; Portland, Oregon; St. Paul; San Francisco and Seattle. According to one count, as many as 4.6 million people took part in the global day of action. ... Read more

Despite boasts, Trump's administration riddled with staffing holes

Mike Pence, usually one for modesty, stepped to the podium Thursday morning for a transition victory lap, crowing that 27 Senate-confirmable positions had been named, 536 beachhead team members were set to land at federal agencies ("bright and early -- on Monday morning"), and that incoming President Donald Trump's transition team had accomplished it all with time and money to spare.

"We're wrapping up this transition on schedule and under budget," Pence said, echoing one of Trump's favorite lines to describe his real estate projects. But the sunny picture Pence painted is an incomplete and misleading one. ... Read more

Donald Trump's Journey From 'Con Man' To President
HP | S.V. Date | 01/19/17

... Mo Elleithee, director of the Institute of Politics and Public Service at Georgetown University and previously a longtime Democratic Party staffer, said voters angry at the system were key to Trump's success. "They wanted someone who just wanted to roll a grenade into the room," he said. "They didn't know what the room was going to look like after it was done. They just wanted it blown up."

Weaver is far less charitable ? toward his own party ? arguing that years of pandering to voters upset about President Barack Obama for less than honorable reasons created the climate for someone like Trump to win. "We preyed on people's fears," he said. "And all of that caught up with us. And we have no one to blame but ourselves."

Matt Mackowiak, a Texas GOP consultant, "Donald Trump is a 100-year-old flood, politically," he said. "Elections are about a choice. You had two unlikeable candidates. One embodied change, the other embodied the status quo."

"If you had a half football stadium worth of voters in three states change their votes, Hillary Clinton would be president, narrowly," he added. ... Read more

Trump asks key Obama counterterrorism officials to stay on | Gregory Hellman | 01/19/17

President-elect Donald Trump's transition team Thursday announced that a handful of top Obama administration counterterrorism officials will remain in their posts after the inauguration. The decision comes amid rising concerns that personnel gaps in key national security agencies could leave the incoming administration ill-prepared to deal with a crisis.

Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said among those staying on after Friday will be Nick Rasmussen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center; Brett McGurk, special presidential envoy for the global coalition to counter ISIL; Tom Shannon, undersecretary of state for political affairs; and Adam Szubin, the Treasury Department's acting undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence. ... When President-elect Donald J. Trump offered Rick Perry the job of energy secretary five weeks ago, Mr. Perry gladly accepted, believing he was taking on a role as a global ambassador for the American oil and gas industry that he had long championed in his home state.

US Government Caught Massively Fabricating Student Loan Default Data
ZeroHedge & WSJ | author | 01/19/17

Ever since 2012 we have warned that one of the biggest threats arising from the US student loan bubble - which is no longer disputed by anyone except perhaps members of the outgoing administration - is not that it is soaring at an unprecedented pace, that's obvious for anyone with the latest loan total number over $1.4 trillion, rising at a pace of nearly $100 billion per year, but that the government - either on purpose or due to honest miscalculation - was not correctly accounting for the true extent of delinquencies and defaults. Today, we finally got confirmation that, as speculated, the US government was indeed fabricating student loan default data, making it appear far lower than it was in reality.

... According to an analysis of the revised data, at more than 1,000 colleges and trade schools, or about a quarter of the total, at least half the students had defaulted or failed to pay down at least $1 on their debt within seven years. This is a stunning number and suggests that the student loan crisis is far greater than anyone had anticipated previously. ... Read more or at WSJ

Brave New Films Video: Protect Public Education by Stopping Betsy DeVos From Becoming Next U.S. Secretary of Education
AlterNet | Robert Greenwald / Brave New Films | 01/17/17

Trump's nomination of Betsy DeVos for education secretary is a threat to public education. DeVos has spent millions funding the privatization of education in Michigan. The result? A failing school system where almost 80 percent of schools are run by private, for-profit companies.

The charter schools in Michigan, influenced by DeVos's agenda, perform lower than national averages, have been criticized for misuse of taxpayer funding, and frequently shut down doors without warning or community input. Adding to the alarm is the fact that DeVos has never held a professional position in education in her life, but plans to lead the Department of Education, where she would be in charge of overseeing and providing equal access to quality education for all Americans. ... Meet Donald Trump's emissary to the superrich: Anthony Scaramucci tells the Davos elite his boss is on their side
Salon | Heather Digby Parton | 01/18/17

A long time ago in an alternate universe far, far away, I wrote a Salon column about how the Republican Party was in trouble because rich gadflies had decided to get personally involved in electoral strategy and that could only spell their doom. These were foolish wealthy donors for the most part, people who believed the size of their bank accounts meant they were renaissance geniuses who can do anything.

... His name is Anthony "the Mooch" Scaramucci, and he could be a character out of an Elmore Leonard novel. In fact, in my 2014 article I wrote, "the man's hijinks make Donald Trump look like a prince by comparison." (I didn't know the extent of Trump's high jinks at the time.) Scaramucci has a big mouth and a big wallet and he has been ostentatiously rubbing elbows with the political elite for quite some time. ... Read more

Four Horsemen is a 2012 British documentary directed by Ross Ashcroft. The documentary points out the faults and consequences of our fractional reserve banking system, debt-based economy and political lobbying by banks, which shows this system to be a serious threat to Western civilization. It also points out concerns about the War on Terror, which claims is not fought to spread democracy, but to create larger debts to the banks.

Among those interviewed are Joseph Stiglitz, former chief economist at the World Bank, Noam Chomsky, linguistics professor, John Perkins, author and former economic hitman, Herman Daly, economy professor and Max Keiser, TV host and former trader

HC | How Nuclear Weapon can Destroy the world in a moment () [44:31]
Most people in India and in Pakistan (and in the U.S.) probably do not know that as many as 9 out of 10 people -- or more -- who die from a nuclear blast, do not die in the explosion itself. Most people probably think that if they die from a nuclear blast, they will simply see a flash and get quickly cooked.

Those within approximately a six square mile area (for a 1 megaton blast) will indeed be close enough to "ground zero" to be killed by the gamma rays emitting from the blast itself. Ghostly shadows of these people will be formed on any concrete or stone that lies behind them, and they will be no more. They literally won't know what hit them, since they will be vaporized before the electrical signals from their sense organs can reach their brains.

Of the many victims of a nuclear war, these are the luckiest ones, of course. Outside the circle where people will be instantly vaporized from the initial gamma radiation blast, the light from the explosion (which is many times hotter than the sun) is so bright that it will immediately and permanently blind every living thing, including farm animals (including cows, sacred or otherwise), pets, birds while in flight and not to mention peasants, Maharajah's, and Government officials -- and soldiers, of course. Whether their eyes are opened or closed. This will happen for perhaps 10 miles around in every direction (for a 1 megaton bomb) -- further for those who happen to be looking towards the blast at the moment of detonation. Even from fifty miles away, a 1 megaton blast will be many times brighter than the noonday sun. Those looking directly at the blast will have a large spot permanently burned into their retinas, where the light receptor cells will have been destroyed. The huge bright cloud being nearly instantly formed in front of them (made in part from those closer to the blast, who have already "become death"), will be the last clear image these people will see.

Most people who will die from the nuclear explosion will not die in the initial gamma ray burst, nor in the multi-spectral heat blast (mostly X-ray and ultraviolet wavelengths) which will come about a tenth of a second after the gamma burst. Nor will the pressure wave which follows over the next few seconds do most of them in, though it will cause bleeding from every orifice. Nor even will most people be killed by the momentary high winds which accompany the pressure wave. These winds will reach velocities of hundreds of miles an hour near the epicenter of the blast, and will reach velocities of 70 miles per hour as far as 6 miles from the blast (for a 1 megaton bomb). The high winds and flying debris will cause shrapnel-type wounds and blunt-trauma injuries.

Together, the pressure wave and the accompanying winds will do in quite a few, and damage most of the rest of the people (and animals, and structures) in a huge circle -- perhaps hundreds of square miles in area.

Later, these people will begin to suffer from vomiting, skin rashes, and an intense unquenchable thirst as their hair falls out in clumps. Their skin will begin to peel off. This is because the internal molecular structure of the living cells within their bodies is breaking down, a result of the disruptive effects of the high radiation dose they received. All the animals will be similarly suffering. Since they have already received the dose, these effects will show up even if the people are immediately evacuated from the area hardly likely, since everything around will be destroyed and the country would be at war.

But this will not concern them at this time: Their immediate threat after the gamma blast, heat blast, pressure wave and sudden fierce wind (first going in the direction of the pressure wave -- outwardly from the blast -- then a moment later, a somewhat weaker wind in the opposite direction), will be the firestorm which will quickly follow, with its intense heat and hurricane-force winds, all driving towards the center where the radioactive mushroom-shaped cloud will be rising, feeding it, enlarging it, and pushing it miles up into the sky.
MF | Nuclear War : What It Would Look Like () [36:16]
Nuclear warfare (sometimes atomic warfare or thermonuclear warfare) is a military conflict or political strategy in which nuclear weaponry is used to inflict damage on the enemy. Compared to conventional warfare, nuclear warfare can be vastly more destructive in range and extent of damage, and in a much shorter time. A major nuclear exchange would have long-term effects, primarily from the fallout released, and could also lead to a "nuclear winter" that could last for decades, centuries, or even millennia after the initial attack. Some analysts claim that with this potential nuclear winter side-effect of a nuclear war almost every human on Earth could starve to death. Other analysts, who dismiss the nuclear winter hypothesis, calculate that with nuclear weapon stockpiles at Cold War highs, in a surprise countervalue global nuclear war, billions of casualties would have resulted but billions of people would nevertheless have survived.

Matt Taibbi's New Book: 'Insane Clown President'

Insane Clown President: Dispatches from the 2016 Circus by Matt Taibbi (2017)

The 2016 presidential contest as told by Matt Taibbi, from its tragicomic beginnings to its apocalyptic conclusion, is in fact the story of Western civilization's very own train wreck.

Mad As Hell - Why the electorate is so pissed off | Chris Martenson | 01/13/17

Making a killing under Obamacare: The ACA gets blamed for rising premiums, while insurance companies are reaping massive profits

While Americans continue to be hammered by rising health care costs, and while congressional lawmakers (with their taxpayer-subsidized health care) do nothing to lower the cost of pharmaceuticals and medical care, one group is reaping a windfall in profit: health insurance companies and their investors.

On Thursday, Aetna reported $734 million in profit on $15.8 billion in revenue for the three months that ended Sept. 30. The nation's third-largest health insurer by revenue handily beat Wall Street estimates for the quarter.

Aetna's earnings report came a week after UnitedHealth reported a 12 percent jump in revenue to $46.3 billion for the three months that ended Sept. 30 compared with the same period the previous year. The company collected $36.1 billion in insurance premiums, a sum 11 percent higher than for the year-ago quarter, while profits increased 29 percent to $1.98 billion

A Salon analysis of regulatory filings found that the top five health insurers -- UnitedHealth, Anthem, Aetna, Humana and Cigna -- have doled out nearly $30 billion in stock buybacks and dividends from 2013 to 2015.

Similar strong results were noted for Humana in their last earnings release. So how can it be that all these companies are both reporting the need for massively higher premiums while also booking higher and higher profits?

Well, when you live in a country that routinely subjects its citizens to racketeering, this is exactly the sort of disconnect you have to live with. They say one thing; but you see with your own eyes, or experience with your own wallet, something completely different. ...

... If the elites don't manage to figure out how to contain their greed, then an angry electorate is just the beginning of their troubles. Anybody seeking to understand the political landscape really just needs to spend a little time on the eroding prosperity of the bottom 99% over the past 20 years. ... Read more

Trump Wants To Cut Russia Sanctions In Return For Nuclear Arms Deal
Reuters & HP | Guy Faulconbridge | 01/15/17

LONDON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will propose offering to end sanctions imposed on Russia for its annexation of Crimea in return for a nuclear arms reduction deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he told The Times of London.

Trump, in an interview with the newspaper published online on Sunday, was deeply critical of previous U.S. foreign policy, describing the invasion of Iraq as possibly the gravest error in the history of the United States and akin to "throwing rocks into a beehive."

But ahead of his inauguration on Friday as the 45th U.S. president, Trump raised the prospect of the first major step towards nuclear arms control since President Barack Obama struck a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia in 2010. ... Read more

Capitalism Needs Constant Growth Which Isn't Sustainable -- So What Do We Do Next??
Surviving the Future: Culture, Carnival and Capital in the Aftermath of the Market Economy by David Fleming (2016)

Surviving the Future lays out a compelling and powerfully different new economics for a post-growth world. One that relies not on taut competitiveness and eternally increasing productivity?"putting the grim into reality"?but on the play, humor, conversation, and reciprocal obligations of a rich culture. Building on a remarkable breadth of intellectual and cultural heritage?from Keynes to Kumar, Homer to Huxley, Mumford to MacIntyre, Scruton to Shiva, Shakespeare to Schumacher?Fleming describes a world in which, as he says, "there will be time for music."

This is the world that many of us want to live in, yet we are told it is idealistic and unrealistic. With an evident mastery of both economic theory and historical precedent, Fleming shows that it is not only desirable, but actually the only system with a realistic claim to longevity. With friendliness, humor, and charm, Surviving the Future plucks this vision out of our daydreams and shows us how to make it real.

*Financial Crash Analysis: $22.6 Billion in Homeowner Relief; $7.8 Trillion to Four Wall Street Banks
Click to zoom in | Pam Martens | 01/11/17

As Goldman Sachs guys prepare to take the reins of power in Washington under the Trump administration, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) provided a tragic reminder on Monday regarding the power of the U.S. citizen versus their Wall Street overlords. The GAO released a study showing that as of October 31, 2016, the government "had disbursed $22.6 billion (60 percent) of the $37.51 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds" that were directed at helping distressed homeowners as a result of the 2008 Wall Street financial crash and the resulting housing bust.

Those paltry billions stand in stark contrast to the $7.8 trillion in near-zero interest loans that the Federal Reserve secretly funneled to just four Wall Street banks from 2007 to 2010. The Fed funneled $2.5 trillion to Citigroup; $2 trillion to Morgan Stanley; $1.9 trillion to Merrill Lynch; and $1.3 trillion to Bank of America. The total amount that the Fed secretly loaned to both U.S. and foreign banks came to $16.1 trillion. ... Read more

A Well-Kept Open Secret: Washington Is Behind India's Brutal Experiment of Abolishing Most Cash | Norbert Haering | 01/11/17

In early November, without warning, the Indian government declared the two largest denomination bills invalid, abolishing over 80 percent of circulating cash by value. Amidst all the commotion and outrage this caused, nobody seems to have taken note of the decisive role that Washington played in this. That is surprising, as Washington's role has been disguised only very superficially.

... On November 8, Indian prime minster Narendra Modi announced that the two largest denominations of banknotes could not be used for payments any more with almost immediate effect. Owners could only recoup their value by putting them into a bank account before the short grace period expired at year end, which many people and businesses did not manage to do, due to long lines in front of banks. The amount of cash that banks were allowed to pay out to individual customers was severely restricted. Almost half of Indians have no bank account and many do not even have a bank nearby. The economy is largely cash based. Thus, a severe shortage of cash ensued. Those who suffered the most were the poorest and most vulnerable. They had additional difficulty earning their meager living in the informal sector or paying for essential goods and services like food, medicine or hospitals. Chaos and fraud reigned well into December. ... Read more and/or original here

The Biggest Commodity Story Of The Year? | James Burgess | 01/11/17

Lithium saw its price triple in 2016, and cobalt--another massively important element in the lithium-ion battery--rose almost 50 percent in the same year, and is poised to become the next critical metal as the world sits on the edge of an energy revolution driven by mainstream electric vehicles, battery gigafactories and power walls. ... The Last Days Of Lehman Brothers Moral Hazard (2008) [59:04]
The heads of Wall Street's biggest investment banks were summoned to an evening meeting by the US Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, to discuss the plight of another - Lehman Brothers. After six months' turmoil in the world's financial markets, Lehman Brothers was on life support and the government was about to pull the plug. Lehman CEO, Dick Fuld, recently sidelined in a boardroom coup, spends the weekend desperately trying to resuscitate his beloved company through a merger with Bank of America or UK-based Barclays. But without the financial support of Paulson and Lehman's fiercest competitors, Fuld's empire - and with it, the stability of the world economy - teeters on the verge of extinction.

ACA (Obama Care) Repeal Would Lavish Medicare Tax Cuts on 400 Highest-Income Households
Center on Budget and Policies | Brandon Debot | 01/12/17

Republicans' planned bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is expected to be similar to the repeal bill that President Obama vetoed in January 2016, would provide an immediate windfall tax cut to the highest-income Americans while raising taxes significantly on about 7 million low- and moderate-income families.

First, the top 400 highest-income taxpayers -- whose annual incomes average more than $300 million apiece -- each would receive an average annual tax cut of about $7 million, we estimate from Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data. This group's tax cut would total about $2.8 billion a year.

Second, ACA repeal would significantly raise taxes on about 7 million low- and moderate-income families due to the loss of their premium tax credits -- worth an average of $4,800 in 2017 -- that help them buy health coverage through the health insurance marketplaces and afford to go to the doctor when needed ... Trump Blasts Publication Of Unverified Russia Claims As 'Fake News'
HP | Michael Calderone | 01/11/17

Trump thanked news organizations that didn't publish the allegations, which were raised in a dossier commissioned by his opponents and which haven't been corroborated. But he took aim at BuzzFeed, called it a "failing pile of garbage," and refused to call on reporter Jim Acosta from CNN, which he labeled "fake news."

... On Tuesday afternoon, CNN reported that top intelligence officials briefed Trump last week about a dossier containing unsubstantiated claims that Russia has "compromising personal and financial information" about him. An hour later, BuzzFeed published the 35-page document, which had been circulating among news organizations for months but had not previously been published because the claims remain unverified. ... Just One GOP Senator Voted To Block Legislation Cutting Social Security, Medicare And Medicaid
HP | Daniel Marans | 01/11/17

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) was the only Republican to vote for a defeated amendment on Tuesday that would have prevented the Senate from adopting legislation cutting Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. The amendment, which Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced as an attachment to a budget resolution laying out rules for repealing Obamacare, failed to clear a 60-vote threshold needed for adoption.

Had it passed, Sanders' amendment would have created a technical hurdle, or "point of order," blocking legislation that reduces the benefits that the three programs provide. Also on Tuesday, Sanders released a list outlining 13 times President-elect Donald Trump "promised not to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid." ... Read more

Here's How To Understand The Bombshell New Report On Trump And Russia
HP | Nick Baumann | 01/10/17

Top intelligence officials have briefed President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump on claims that Russian spies have "compromising personal and financial information about Trump," CNN reported Tuesday evening.

The allegations were contained in memos written by a former British spy hired to conduct opposition research on Trump. The claims in the documents -- which BuzzFeed News published in full on Tuesday night -- came from Russian sources, the ex-spy told reporters for multiple outlets. But these claims have been reported before, they aren't independently verified, and even the man who originally broke the story has warned readers to treat them cautiously. Read more

Pentagon Vows More European Wargames to 'Deter Russia' | Jason Ditz | 01/08/17

Despite the incoming president-elect making a normalization of diplomatic ties with Russia a top priority, the Pentagon continues to move forward with bigger and more complicated wargames, vowing to continue coming up with ever more such operations to "deter Russian aggression."

Lt. Gen. Tim Ray, the deputy commander of Eurocom, insisted that the ongoing wargames, which involve the US deploying large numbers of tanks into Germany to practice massing large numbers of tanks in a single place, was vital to "ensure the territorial integrity of our allies and maintain a Europe that is whole, free, prosperous, and at peace." ... The Most Loathsome Republican: Mitch McConnell Does the GOP's Dirty Work While All Eyes Follow Trump
AlterNet | Steven Rosenfeld | 01/09/17/span>

As Senate Republicans make a mockery of Trump cabinet confirmation hearings this week by ramming as many appointees through as quickly as possible to avoid scrutiny, Americans are going to discover there are many shades of darkness in GOP-led Washington.

Trump, needless to say, is not merely the headline grabber-in-chief, as evidenced by his 3:27am tweet Monday smearing Meryl Streep, who had the guts while receiving a Golden Globe lifetime achievement award Sunday to remind viewers that not all U.S. citizens agree with Trump's boundless bullying. Trump said he had $315 million in debt. He left out $1.5 billion. | Judd Legum | 01/06/17

A new report reveals the breathtaking scope of Trump's conflicts of interest.

Trump filed documents with the FEC over the summer that revealed he owed at least $315 million to ten entities. This debt, some of which is personally guaranteed by him, was a clear conflict. As president, Trump will be responsible for regulating entities that he also owes money to. Worse, these debts are frequently renegotiated, giving these companies leverage over Trump in the regulatory process.

A report this afternoon from the Wall Street Journal, however, revealed that Trump's disclosure was the tip of the iceberg. The FEC required Trump only to report debt from entities he fully controls. The disclosure left out "more than $1.5 billion lent to partnerships that are 30%-owned by him." That debt has been securitized and is owed to at least 150 financial entities. ... Read more
